PLEDGED TO NO ONE
• • MR. LYE AT FRANKTON (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Speaking at a large meeting at Frank ton last evening, Mr. S. C. C. Lye, Liberal-Labour candidate for the Hamilton seat, said he gave no pledge of allegiance to any party. He was opposed to the present Government, and was ready to support Labour in any sane measure. In answer to a question from a Maori in the audience, Mr. Lye maintained that native farmers should have every opportunity to finance their land. He believed they should be encouraged and assisted to take up farming, and should receive agricultural education. Stressing the hardships caused to families deprived of their means of livelihood by the sickness of the wageearner, ' Mr. Lye advocated pay for members of the second division of the railways while absent from work through sickness. Mr. Lye said he believed in the teaching of the Bible in schools, but was opposed to compulsory religious training.
