CRASH INTO BUS EVIDENCE AT INQUEST Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. An* inquest on Geoffrey Charles Phillips, a motor-cyclist who was fatally injured in a collision with a motor-bus at Petone, was concluded before the Coroner, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., to-day. The inquiry opened on Friday, when the evidence of several witnesses, including the driver of the bus, Charles Edward Bentley, was heard.
The coroner’s verdict was that Phillips died at Wellington Hospital on September 27, the cause of his death being a fracture at the base of his skull, other serious injuries, and shock, which he received as the result of a collision with a motor-bus. Evidence showed that the driver of the bus was turning from Jackson Street into William Street at a slow pace. Phillips was riding along Jackson Street at an excessive speed, with his head down, and did not see the bus until it was too late to avoid it. The circumstances showed that no blame was attachable to the driver of the bus.
