BOWLING CLUB’S RENT

RATE FIXED AT MT. EDEN After considerable discussion last evening, the Mount Eden Borough Council decided to charge the Mount Eden Bowling Club £IOO a year for the site of the new greens at Nicholson Park. Originally, the council proposed charging £IOO and rates, or £l2O without rates. Its new decision is regarded as a return for the money to be spent by the council in putting the greens in order. “No other council would charge this amount,” protested Cr. J. Smith when discussing the council’s original proposal. “The club should not have offered more than £SO or £7O. Cr. D. C. Fraser denied that the council was putting down the green at a cost of £2,000, and said the amount would not be more than £I,OOO. The club had been asked to pay 12 per cent, on the sum, when it was going to build a pavilion and make the green a beauty spot of which Mount Eden could be proud. When the present site was left, the council would get largely increased rates when the land was subdivided. Crs. G. L. Taylor and G. M. Melville asked for further investigation, but an amendment that the subject should go back to the Finance Committee was defeated.
