Safes Robbed

THIEVES ACTIVE IN WEEK-END Raid on Business Premises

TWO safes in city business premises were robbed during the week-end. In one instance the safe was not damaged, and the thieves left no trace.

The stim of £2O was stolen from the safe in the premises of John W. Andrew and Sons, Ltd. ' (Ford Sales and Services), Upper Symonds Street. The circumstances surrounding this theft are mysterious. When the safe was opened this morning it was found that the money. was missing, but the safe itself had. not been interfered with in any way. An investigation was made, but no trace could be found of anyone having broken into the building. It is surmised that the theft may have been committed by someone having possession of skeleton keys. Nothing else in the building was touched. The thief was evidently in search of money only.’ A CLUMSY JOB

By smashing a rear window thieves gained entrance to the premises of

Aulsebrook and Company, biscuit and confectionery manufacturers, in Beach Road. s

They broke open the safe in the office with a chisel, and stole about £lO in cash. Minor damage was done to biscuits and confectionery in the building.

The *‘job” was a clumsy one. The intruders had ripped the back out of the safe after a good deal of hammering and cutting. On Saturday night a man was seen walking away from the home of Mr. H. J. Brewer, Ranfurly Road, while the occupants were away. Later it was discovered that the house had been ransacked and that a quantity of articles was missing. Mr. L. G. Hill’s tobacconist’s shop in Parnell Rise was broken into on Friday jiight and a quantity of tobacco and a small sum of money stolen.
