Set Sail Is In Excellent Fettle

HANDSOME win at orari first SIGHT’S GOOD EFFORT

(Special to THE SDN) TIMARU, Thursday. •The Geraldine Racing Club opened ~ spring meeting at Orari to-day in lorious weather, and before a large "rowd. The track was in perfect orc. r ;in d some good times were recorded. Speculation was brisk, totalisator investments amounting to tToH S 10s, which represents an increase of £ 365. First Hurdles

Radiate was responsible for an impressive performance when he won the First Hurdles from Mime. In the early stages ho was in the rear of the field, but when straightened up for home ho finished brilliantly and was going away at the end. Mime made * creditable showing for a novice, and but for making a bad jump at the second to last fence may have won. Red Heather was a moderate third, and was followed homo by Krin-Go-Bragh and Royal Land. First Raid was considered unbeatable in the Ohapi Hack, and he was backed accordingly. Always in a prominent position he drew out in tlio straight and defeated the fastlinishing Corn by half a length. The latter named was slow away and did veil to finish so closo to the winner, the is by Solferino from Rosalita, and -ives indications of developing into a good galloper. Ron Rose ran a good race into third place, and was ft - lowed home by Pound Mote. The Cup

Set Sail put up a meritorious performance when she won the Geraldine Cup by a narrow margin from Pink Note. Tho Solferino mare was content to lay in behind the leader for the greater portion of tho journey, but once on the road for home she unwound her characteristic run, quickly passing Town Bank, and then Malmsley. She threw out a determined challenge to Pink Note, and sustaining her run she passed the judge with a short head to spare. It was a magnificent effort, which gained her many admirers for the Mew Zealand Cup. Pink Note put up a good effort, but after having every chance he succumbed in the last few strides. He still is capable of improvement, and with an outing at Wingatui next month he should be well forward for his Cup engagement. The unlucky runner of the race was Malmsey. Town Bank pulled up very lame, and Prompter was outclassed.

Apex was made a firm favourite for the Geraldine Trot, but after having every chance Alountain Ore defeated him easily by three lengths. The winner was always travelling comfortably and he had the race won a long way from home. Harry Locanda was 60 yards away third, and was followed by Young Bingen. Squatters’ Handicap

Silver Coot was backed down to a short price for the Squatters Handicap, but he received a shocking run and was beaten into fourth place. He met interference soon after the start, and in no time was at the rear of the field. Once he' did get clear he literally flew. Money Aline ranged alongside Buoyant in tile straight, and finishing resolutely, gained tho verdict by a long neck. Tuahine ran a good race into third place, and she was chased home by the favourite. Zeuxis finished with a wonderful burst of speed to win the Raukapuka Handicap from the Southerner Camisader. With three furlongs to go he awis well back last, but racing across the top he received a run on the rails, and once in the straight he gathered up his field in a flash, and sustaining his effort he won going away by half a length. It was a remarkable effort and astute judges remarked after the race that it was one of the most astonishing runs ever seen on a racecourse. Camisuder had every chance. Amourette was close up third, and the next to finish was Gaybird, who should improve.

atoned for his defeat earlier in me day when ho led his opponents homo in the Orari Trot. He was driven *1 patient race and cut down Wild Voyase in the straight to win by two angths Logan H’Ora, the favourite. 'A,*' * alr race into third place, and 01 the remainder Becky Mine did best.
