Four Winners Hail From Te Awamutu
AVONDALE’S FINAL DAY
FE principal feature of yesterday’s racing: at Avondale was the success of F. E. Loomb’s Te Awamutu stable, which turned out three winners—Prodice, Arikitoa and Flying Prince—who between them accounted for £l,OlO. Te Kara staged a come-back to win the main handicap, and it is worth recording that he also is trained at Te Awamutu.
Favoured upon this occasion by a fine day, up till about the fifth race, the spring meeting of the Avondale Jockey Club was concluded yesterday under conditions that were much more pleasant. But the financial side of the two days’ racing cannot 4 be regarded very satisfactorily, for the totalisator showed a decrease of £50,0361 on the last spring meeting, which was held at Ellerslie. Yesterday the sum of £28,472 was handled, against £50,668* 12 months ago, and the total for Saturday and Monday amounted to £55,3911, compared with £105,428 at Ellerslie. That there should be such a falling-off in the returns is unfortunate in view of the heavy expenditure incurred by the club in making its course one of the best in the Dominion, and also the fact that up-to-date stand accommodation is urgently required. The racing was excellent throughout, and there were one or two surprises, Maori Boy and Golden Krist both returning double-figure dividends. The largest price of the meeting was paid by Sports King, who was at extreme odds when he filled the role of runnerup in the New Lynn Handicap. Gallant Te Kara won the Plumpton Handicap, and the sprint went to Hoariri. The latter, together with Arikitoa and Storm Fiend, won doubles at the fixture. The Avbndale Guineas went to Prodice, the Catmint filly putting a good break on the opposition over the final furlong. Notes on the racing, together with detailed results, follow. Grey Lynn Hurdles Nine contested the opening event, the Grey Lynn Hurdles, and in a modest pool backers went for Kawini £366, the Uralla—Royal Form bracket £220, Glenotus £IBO and Karamu £llß. Hangawera, Llewellyn, Royal Form, Karamu, Uralia and Polyphemus was the order to the first fence. At the second Hangawera, leading, lost his rider, and the mishap brought down Rahepoto and caused interference to Polyphemus. Passing the post the first time Llewellyn was a
couple of lengths ahead of Karamu, with Royal Form, Glenotus, Kawini and Polyphemus at good intervals. Llwewellyn maintained his position along the back, where Glenotus and Kawini both improved their positions. Into the straight Llewellyn was three lengths in front of Royal Form, Kawini, Karamu and Glenotus, who were bunched. Royal Form and Llewellyn were almost on terms at the last fence, ahead of Glenotus and Kawini, where Royal Form fell, interfering with Glenotus, and Llewellyn won by.half a length from the favourite, with Glenotus, three lengths back. Then came Karamu, with Polyphemus a long way back last. Nursery Handicap The six acceptors lined up for the Nursery Handicap, Imperial Guard £1,015 being a hot favourite, with Flying Prince £ 653 also heavily backed, and Eaglet £523 at the head c the others. At the start Flying Prince shot out fast from Golden Measure, the other four getting caught in the tapes. At the end of the first furlong Flying Prince was making play from Imperial Guard, Eaglet, Golden Measure, Bennie and Snow Plane, but the favourite had a slight advantage over Flying Prince at the home turn, only to run wide, the pair being five lengths in front of Eaglet, with Bennie, Golden Measure and Snow Plane further back. Flying Prince held his own in the run home to win by three lengths from Imperial Guard, Eaglet finishing very fast half a length back. Bennie was eight lengths back fourth, and there was more daylight to Snow Plane and Golden Measure. Mount Albert Handicap Nineteen ran in the Mount Albert Handicap, a good pool favouring Lady Quex £836, Luminary £736, Blue Spear £371, Upoko £371, and Storm Fiend £369, while Maori Boy and Abbey Queen carried £ll7 and £4O respectively. Optimistic, Diamond Queen and Valda got all the worst of the despatch. Blue Spear, Storm Fiend, Upoko,, Leitrim and Luminary were at the head of a bunch. Leitrim ran into the lead as they started to come across the top from Abbey Queen, Storm Fiend, Blue Spear, Sulla and Maori Boy. Leitrim led into the straight from Abbey Queen, Storm Fiend, Sulla, Maori Boy and Luminary. Half way up the running Abbey Queen and Maori Boy were in command, but both hung out badly, and Storm Fiend joined issue, a slashing finish resulting in a dead-heat between Maori Boy (who finished under the judge’s bqx) and Storm Fiend, with Abbey Queen a neck away. Nurjahan was a good fourth, and then came Diamond Queen, Air King, Ulingar, Good Boy, Leitrim, Valda, Master Lu and Lady Quex. Plumpton Handicap The defections of Nukumai, Te Koroke and Desert Glow left a field of nine in the principal handicap, the Plumpton, which was productive of another good race, the veteran Te Kara showing a clean pair of heels up the straight. Bisox £l,Oll, Royal Mint £843, King Lu £662, Te Kara £597 and High Pitch £469 carried most money. Papatu and Royal Mint led out of the straight from High Pitch, Bisox, King Lu, White Fang, Te Kara, Mint Leaf and Auriculus, but running into the back stretch High Pitch had taken up the running from Papatu, Royal Mint, Bisox, White Fang, King Lu, Te Kara and Mint Leaf, with Auriculus still last. Crossing the top
the field bunched, half a dozen lengths separating them at the home turn, with High Pitch, Papatu, Bisox, Te Kara and Auriculus in a heap, and Mint Leaf following. From the distance Te Kara began to forge ahead, and Mint Leaf and Bisox followed him, with Royal Mint also up, and in this order they finished, Te Kara getting a two lengths’ decision over Mint Leaf, with Bisox a length away, a similar distance in front of Royal Mint. Nearly three lengths away King Lu was fifth, with High Pitch, Auriculus and Papatu next in order and White Fang last. They ran the first two furlongs in 27 1-5, the half mile in 54 1-5, and the first six in 1.21 2-5. The win was a most popular one. Avondale Guineas A nice field of ten saddled up for the Avondale Guineas. Betting operations were practically confined to Prodice and Mithra., who carried £1,028 and £7ll respectively, with Grand Tea £507 and High Falutin’ £4Bl next best backed. A good start saw Sir Russell hop out smartly from the inside position, being followed by Mithra, Prodice, Kingsland, Gold Money, Jolly Money, Grand Tea and White Wings, with High Falutin’ and Metellus (slow to get into his stride) the last pair. At the six furlongs White Wings was making the pace from Mithra, Grand Tea, Prodice, Jolly Money, Gold Money, Sir Russell, Kingsland and High Falutin’. Coming round into the straight White Wings
was still in charge, being clear from Prodice, Grand Tea and Gold Money, with Mithra, High Falutin’, Kingsland, Metellus and Sir Russell following in that order. Once straightened up Prodice went to the front, and coming away in dashing style won easily by five lengths from Gold Money, who was four lengths in front of High Falutin’, the latter coming from well back. White Wings was another length headed him to win by a neck. KingThen came Grand Tea, Kingsland, Mithra and Metellus with Jolly Money tailed off.
They ran the first furlong in 14 3-5, two furlongs in 26 3-5, and the half mile in 53, with the mile cut out in 1.48. President’s Handicap A field of nine contested the President’s Handicap, and backers went strongly for the first day’s winner, Hoariri, who was entrusted with £1,302, Kingfield £569, Silvermine £546 and Benzora £477 coming in for fair support. The field moved off in line, Silvermine, Whaka King, Kingfield, Beau Cavalier, Oration, Hoariri, Tinokoa, Benzora and Staghunter being the order soon after the start. Crossing the top Silvermine was still making play, from Hoariri, Whaka King, Kingfield, Beau Cavalier, Tinokoa and Benzora. Hoariri was up with Silvermine into the straight, Kingfield just behind them, and Whaka King, Tinokoa, Benzora, Beau Cavalier and Oration following. From here out it was a three-horse race, Silvermine looking all over a winner until he weakened in the last 30 yerds, when Hoariri headed hi mto win by a neck. Kingfield was two and a-half lengths away third, and then followed Whaka King, Tinokoa, Oration, Staghunter and Benzora, with Beau Cavalier last.
New Lynn Handicap Arikitoa won the New Lynn Handicap, but he was all out to hold off an outsider in Sports King. Arikitoa £997 was the favourite, and there was some money for Billikins .£989, with Killute carrying £330, Sports King carried but £45. Billikins began with her usual brilliancy from Winsome Boy, Arikitoa, Nassock, Tea Lady, Little Gift and Killute. A little further on Billikins and Arikitoa were together in the van from Tea Lady, Winsome Boy, Little Gift, Komak, and Sports King. Crossing the top the first pair were still together and they turned for home on terms, with Tea Lady, Sports King, Komak, Winsome Boy and Star Comet following, Arikitoa drawing away at the distance and stalling off a late challenge by a rank outsider in Sports King, won by a length. Three lengths away was Komak, who just headed Tea Lady on .the post for third. Then came Billikins, Nassock, Killute, Star Comet and Winsome Boy. Nihotapu Handicap
The concluding event, the Nihotapu Handicap, saw the best-backed horses being Te Koroke £1,052, Ohinemuri £BBO, and Judge’s Box £648, while the eventual winner, Golden Krist, was entrusted with only £206. Master Doon, Judge’s Box, Te Koroke and Ohinemuri was the order out of the tapes, and at the end of a couple of furlongs Thursby had taken up the running from Ohinemuri, Judge’s Box, Te Koroke and Master Doon, Ohinemuri being pulled up at the five furlongs. Thursby piloted the field into the straight, attended by Te Koroke, Master Doon, Golden Krist, Serang, Judge’s Box and Siaosi. Once in line Golden Krist went after the leader and went away to score by half a length from Te Koroke, with Thursby
a similar distance away third and Siaosi, Master Doon, Serang and Judge’s Box next in order. In the Mount Albert Handicap Maori Boy went across the course after entering the straight, and interfered slightly with some horses behind. His
rider was cautioned by the chief stipendiary steward (not suspended, as was erroneously reported yesterday). Following are the results:
