GERALDINE MEETING

OPENS ON THURSDAY THE ACCEPTORS' Press Association TIMARU. Monday. Acceptances for the first day of the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting on Thursday and Friday, are as follow: FIRST HURDLES Of £130; 13 furlongs

Is It Wise? As Winalut was decisively beaten by Limerick in tile Warwick Stakes, and again in the Chelmsford Stakes, it would appear that his connections were offering some excuse for his defeat in that event, as it must be admitted that severe races over a middle distance against a champion like Limerick may not enhance the prospects of Winalot in the long-distance Melbourne Cup, which is still eight weeks off. Winalot. to have any chance against Limerick over a mile or a nine furlong course, would need to be strung right up to his best, hence is it wise to give him such severe races now, seeing that he has been backed to tvin a fortune in the Melbourne Cup? Possibly these early middle distance races for Winalot are to fit him for those rich weight-for-age races—the Spring Stakes, of one mile and a-half, value £2,500, and the Rand wick Plate of £2.500, run on September 29 and October 6 respectively. Of course, one must not forget that Winalot stands up to racing better than most hre-ses. This was proved in last season’s records, and it may be that his trainer realises that W inalot must get the races. However. Point is: Are there no easier races to be found for Winalot in Australia than those against the galloping machine, Limerick?

Southland Gallops Du ™S the closing week there was very little fast work performed on the {southland Racing Club’s tracks, but on Thursday morning a number of local gallopers were extended over the inside grass circuit, which was dead and somewhat holding (says the “Times”). Giving away over 211 b, Celerity 11. also conceded Spean Bridge about two lengths’ start over four furlongs. Spean Bridge prevailed by a narrow margin, and ran out the distance in 55 3-6 sec. the first two furlongs taking 27 4-ssec. In a gallop over six furlongs on the outside of the R.R.C.’s course proper, Silver Paper is reported to have equalled the track record set by that brilliant sprinter Soldiers* Chorus away back in 1913.
