NEW REGENT

"THE LAST COMMAND” “Behind the Scenes” might well be the title of the picture, “The Last Command,” now showing at the New Regent Theatre, because the plot is laid behind the scenes of a great film studio at Hollywood and behind the scenes of the old Tzarist Russian Army. story tells of a poor Russian called up for an extra in a mob scene

at a Hollywood studio. Years before he had been an all-powerful Russian general in the service of the Tzar and the memory of it crowds back on him as he wears the old uniforms before the camera. He had fallen in love with a Russian girl but in .doing so incurred the enmity of a man who was to become a Red x’evolutionary. Revolution breaks oiit. The girl helps the general to escape from Russia, then she is killed in a railroad wreck. The general does .not know. Stripped of his glory, beaten by poverty, he seeks the girl all over the world. Years pass. In Hollywood they meet, the Red and the general. The Red a director, the general an extra. The Red tells the general the girl is deda, then casts him a Russian general. A grim, sardonic jest! , A stage divertissement is also presented at the New Regent this week in the “Winter Frolics,” a charming and colourful dancing act in which 30 performers take part. The musical side of the programme is well catered for by Mr. Maurice Guttridge, who conducts the Regent Operatic Orchestra and also plays the Wurlitzer organ.
