OPIUM-SMOKING IN EAST
COMMISSION TO INQUIRE British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Thursday. Britain’s request for inquiry into opium smoking in the Far East came before the Fifth Committee of the League of Nations yesterday at Geneva. Thirteen delegates, including six on behalf of the British Empire, voted in favour of the inquiry, and 17 refrained from voting. The Chinese delegate favoured the investigation being extended to include otlier dangerous drugs and contraband, but he alone voted against the proposal. Thirteen of the 17 States whose representatives refrained from voting were European. The resolution favouring the inquiry was forwarded to the Assembly. It included an expression of hope that the United States will permit the commission engaged on the inquiry to visit the Philippines.
