CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOUR

36TH ANNUAL CONVENTION HISTORY OF THE MOVEMENT The Auckland Provincial Christian Endeavour Union will hold its 36th annual convention during the weekend. The annual meeting was held this afternoon. In the Unity Hall this evening a junior endeavour rally will be held, and on Monday evening a banquet of Old Endeavourers will be held at the Beresford Street Church. This will be followed by the annual convention covenant service. Sunday will be observed in many churches as Endeavour Sunday. The Christian Endeavour movement was started in 1881 in Portland, Maine. U.S.A., by the Rev. F. E. Clark, afterwards Dr. Clark. Within a few years a number of societies were in active operation in Auckland, but after a time the movement suffered a setback, but a few individuals managed to keep it alive. When the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher came to New Zealand he brought of Dr. Clark’s concern at the low state of the movement in this country, and from that time forward the work has advanced so that in Auckland to-day over 50 societies, with over 1,000 members, are active.

The movement now holds about 4.y00,000 members in 75.000 societies of 80 religious denominations throughout the world.
