Obituary

MR. GEORGE HICKMOTT A well-known Christchurch resident, Mr. George Hickmott, of St. Albans, died on Friday at the age of 62. With a partner Mr. Hickmott founded the Union Brewery and in 1924 sold out to New Zealand Breweries, Ltd., and became a director of the company. At the time of his death he was in charge of Manning’s branch of the company. Mr. Hickmott was well known in sporting circles, being a keen follower of trotting football and cricket. For many years he was a prominent member of the St. Albans Cricket Club. Mr. Hickmott is survived by his wife and one son. Another son was killed in the Great War.

MR. JAMES BUTLER STONEY An early New Zealand Court official, Mr. James Butler Stoney, died at his home in Carlton Gore Road on Thursday, at the age of 86. Born at Malta, Mr. Stoney was the eldest son of the late Major Henry Butler Stoney, and was educated in England and Tasmania. Coming to New Zealand in 1862, he entered the Justice Department and was appointed clerk of the Magistrate’s Court in Auckland. In 1869 he was appointed to Thames, later being transferred to Dunedin. Returning to Auckland in 1881, Mr. Stoney served for a time with the court, later being in service at Blenheim and Stratford. He retired in 1904 and lived in retirement in Auckland. He was interested in church work and was actively connected with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and later of St. Mark’s, Remuera. Mr. Stoney is survived by his wife. Tfaer# are no children.
