DEAD HAULAGE

PAEROA-POKENO GAP NECESSARY RAILWAY WORK (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Friday. Discussion of the railway statement this afternoon allowed Mr, A. M. Samuel (Ohinemuri) to renew his fight for construction of the Paeroa-Pokeno loop line. This was not needed so much as a new work, said Mr. Samuel, but as a connecting link which would bring Auckland 45 miles nearer the East Coast, and which would effect a great economic saving through the elimination of many miles of dead haulage. The line would also help to alleviate congestion at Frankton, and would save the necessity of track-duplica-tion between Frankton and Ngaruawahia. “It should have been constructed long ago,” said Mr. Samuel. “There are no engineering difficulties, and the line would open up some of the finest dairying land in the world, while the construction work would help to relieve unemployment, and would absorb those men hitherto engaged on the Waihou and Ohinemuri river improvement scheme.

“I don’t want to draw invidious comparisons, but I must confess I was a little surprised to find 'that the Ro-torua-Taupo line is to be given precedence over the Paeroa-Pokeno line.”
