AVONDALE SPRINTS Old Te Kara was never better in his life than when he stepped out on the course at Avondale this morning. Certainly on looks he appears far from the has-been stage. The Te Awamutu Cup horse was given an easy mile outside 'he trestles (60ft out) this morning, but was not out after time. It is more than probable that A. E. Ellis will be in the saddle, McTavish, his usual pilot, being required for Valkon. Nukumai and Bisox were associated in a spin over seven furlongs, which they both left behind in 1.36 4-5. Bisox was on the outer and covered a bit more ground. Love Call, in company with Te Koroke, shaped very pleasingly in a three-furlong spin, the time registered, 38 4-5, being quite good. The two-year-old appears to have got through plenty of work. The Best Five The best gallop of the morning was that recorded by Benzora and Vivo, the 'former beating the chestnut in 1.6 3-5. Benzora is fast coming into form, and may get on the winning list before returning to Hawera. Maori Boy beat Serang at the end of four furlongs in 53 3-5. Camp Prince and Envoy were in front of Principal over four furlongs in 55 1-5, the trio going easily. Valkon, on the outside, was going better than Auriculus over six furlongs in a smart 1.20. Valkon is ready to run a great race in the Cup tomorrow.
Luminary slipped over four furlongs in 53 1-5, and Jolly Money pleased better than Princess Rain in a sprinting task. High Pitch covered five furlongs in 1.7 1-5, and Liaison displayed useful sprinting ability to do better than Desert Glow from the four-furlong post in 52 3-5. Flying Prince and Air King covered three furlongs in a slick 38 2-5. The former is a nioe-looking two-year-old, built for speed, and he carries himself well. Inside Grass On the grass track on the inside Royal Mint went once round (a short nine furlongs) in 1.58 2-5, and Billikins was not bustled to run five in 1.11 3-5. Galloping brilliantly, Flying Juliet flew over four furlongs in 50 1-5, which was pretty smart travelling, for the track was holding. Obviously she has been kept up to the collar of late weeks. Komak sprinted home three’ furlongs, this completing the fast work. Others seen out included King Lu, Siaosi and Lysander, none of whom was given efforts against the watch. Clever is an unlikely runner in the Avondale Stakes, and in the event of the filly not seeing the post, T. Metcalf will have the mount on Supremacy in that race. Late arrivals included Billikins, Ohinemuri and Valda.
In Double Harness? It is on the cards that Alan McDonald will very shortly take over the training of Mr. C. F. Vallance’s team, as when they are finally established at Palmerston North, Miss G. Maher will hand over the reins of government to McDonald, says a Hastings writer.
Should Win Anywhere! Good Sport, alone, accomplished the best of the morning by doing seven furlongs in 1*295 —good enough to win anywhere, says a “Tribune” writer optimistically, in referring to Saturday’s gallops. His fractional times read: First three in 365, four in 495, five in 63 1-5, and six in 1.165. Kinross and High Court put up one of the best gallops of the morning in running five furlongs in 63 4-5. The first two furlongs took 245, three in 365, and four in a tick under 50. Lack Of Enthusiasm It is not often that a racing club, with a record such as the Alexandra Racing Club, and in a good financial position, is in danger of having to close down owing to lack of interest among its members. At the annual meeting on Thursday. Mr. T. Steel stated there was a record gathering at the Boxing Day fixture. The work was getting beyond some of the older officials. 1 ounger men were needed to carry on the burden, so long borne by some of the older officials. It was decided to postpone further consideration until Saturday, in the hope that there would be a larger attendance. The secretary, A. Chappell, tendered his resignation, owing to not having the necessary time to carry out the duties.
