Two-Year-Olds Face Randwick Barrier

DOMINION YOUNGSTERS PLEASE In a series of trials for two-year-odds at Randwick last week, the youngsters that showed up best against the watch were Poldara, a Breeders’ Plate candidate, and Gallant Elsa, who is engaged in the Gimcrack Stakes. With these rich races little more than a fortnight off, the young stock are beginning to show their swiftest paces now. Poldara and Gallant Elsa were in the same heat, and the latter won narrowly, running the half-mile in 525. She is by the Futurity Stakes winner. Top Gallant, and is a promising galloper. .Poldara is a half brother to Wedara by Polymestor. Lady Doris, by Doric, was another smart winner, running the half-mile in ■53 easing up. She and the second horse. Palm Dale, are trained by Pat. Nailon. Gleaner, a half-brother to Bairn, by Saltash, was a good third. He is a red roan, whose appearance will surprise racegoers when they see him on the course—a real spotted and dappled wonder. Two New Zealanders Peacemaker, by Limond, Limerick's sire, showed pace in leading home a field, but the time, 555, was slow. In this heat, Polyxena, from New Zealand did well, and so did Raconda, by Rosscndale. Golden Desire, by Saltash, revealed a lot of education and smartness at the barrier, and led the field in her heat, but she was easing up at the and the time was 55. Violet Rays, by Great Star, proved another promising filly. She led her jeld, but after the first two furlongs in -6 the pace was not kept up. Another good winner was Marie’s Bride, by Orby’s Pride, raced by “Miss Ethel Buckley,” that being the Pseudonym that conceals the identity the wife of Mr. George Marlow. Again the time was 55. A good galloper •and a well-made filly behind her was Gladioli, by Ethiopian. Still another trial was won by Flying Toy, by Archery, a smart little filly who, however, seemed a trifle lame after the effort. Among other youngsters doing well at Randwick just now are Sir Samuel Hordern’s Violin Solo; Pentheus, owned by Mr. Bob Walder, and by Rossendale—Cerecia; and Valleni, by Valais* Top o’ the Morn, by Top Gallant: and Silver Wings, by Magpie; all trained by C. Promising Jockey Attached to S. Hodge’s team at Avondale to-morrow is a promising lad, S. Heath, who will be open for engagements at the meeting this week-end. This youth shows ability in the saddle, and rides round about 7.0. Chaser For Ellerslie Handy, Bendower and Middleman finished in that order at Hastings recently over six furlongs in 1.215* Handy went well and is being kept going to fulfil an engagement at Auckland early next month. Hoylake's Rider C. E. Eastwood will ride Hoylake in his spring engagements, including the New Zealand Cup. The imported horse is working well at present and shows evidence of developing into a stayer. His nine furlong gallop with Count Cavour this morning was a good trial for the Ashburton Handicap on Saturday.

Barrier Practice “Sir Modred” reports that one morning this week the local trainers, J. A. Rowland and F. W. Ellis, produced a field of eight novices to iine up for barrier practice four from each trainer’s stable. They behaved well at the starting post and moved out to a verv even and satisfactory dispatch.
