Who's Who In The Avondale Stakes
The two-year-olds will make their bow to the Auckland racing public in the Avondale Stakes tomorrow. There are many who will be making their debut, but of the 24 acceptors a fourth of them raced in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui last Saturday. That is the only form there is to go upon. In addition to the race last Saturday, many of the Southern two-year-olds have had the benefit of participating in a few parades before race crowds, and among them there were some that did not compete in the Wanganui race. The form in that event the past few seasons has been rather misleading when applied to the Avondale Stakes, and yet that is practically all that Auckland racing folk have to go upon. For some reason or another the custom of staging a parade in Auckland early in the spring was shelved on this occasion, probably being overlooked. It was unfortunate, however. The following list shows where the youngsters engaged to-morrow (who raced at Wanganui) finished in the Debutante Stakes last Saturday—it jnay yet prove a valuable guide to form —with the distances separating
the first, second, third and fourth horses:— * Speed Light (head) i ♦Francolin (15 lengths) 2 ♦Courtlike (5 length) 3 Clever 4 Rangitoa * ’ 10 Alloy ♦Since scratched. Others that ha.ve shown promise on the tracks and on parade are Ceremony, First Money, Imperial Guard, Love Call and Hunting Day. A com Pl©te summing-up of the possibilities in this event is given in the usual place, but there are four that can be named as appealing rather more than their fellows. These are: Ceremony, First Money, Clever and Hunting Day. A point to be remembered when dealing with the prospects in this event is that from the five-furlong barrier there is but a run of 60 yards before they come to a turn, with a run to the judge exceeding two furlongs. Therefore those horses drawn a long way out will have to be near-cham-pions to win, for it means that they will be forced wide out all the way round the bend. Many of those given below will not go to the post, but they are included for reference purposes.
