To-Morrow’s Soccer

PONSONBY MEETS Y.M.C.A.

Hamilton at Blandford Park

The closing stages of the senior championship will advance a further step to-morrow, Y.M.C.A. and Trams being the feature game at Blandford Park. Ponsonby is now a point behind Trams, and a loss to-morrow may mean losing the championship honours. The visit of Hamilton to headquarters to meet North Shore should provide an attractive preliminary bout. Onehunga meets Belmont at Onehunga, and Trams should win again from Nortlicote. Y.M.C.A. got behind a bit in its championship engagements while running so strong far the Chatham Cup. and now has to make up for arrears. Consequently the Young Men will again appear in the feature attraction, and are hopeful of succeeding against Ponies where they failed against Trams last week. Y.M. has no chance of gaining championship honours now, but may prejudice Ponsonby’s chance by a win or draw to-morrow. Y.M. put paid to the Ponies’ account in the Chatham Cup knock-outs, and it is quite on the cards that the black-and-blue brigade may meet with a reverse to-morrow.

In any case, it is anticipated that the game will be less of a productive of superior Soccer to that displayed on Saturday last. ‘Whatever the result to-morrow, a meeting between Trams and Ponies to decide the championship is inevitable, but both sides are reluctant to set to grips, and are satisfied for each other to meet the .lower clubs with no championship chance, in the hope that one or other leader may meet with a reverse.

It would appear that the authorities are preparing to abandon the Falcon Cup knock-outs, which is an unfortunate suggestion, causing disappointment among the clubs which have played their way into the semi-final. The curtain-raiser to-morrow between the Hamilton and Shore Clubs should provide an attractive display, as both the Waikato and local teams play lively Soccer and are old-time friendly rivals. The semi-finals for the Dacre Cup should provide two tough knock-outs, and the finals games of the junior grades are now being speeded up. In meeting NTorthcote, tho Corpora - tion Club should have no difficulty in maintaining its occupancy of the top rung of the ladder, and Belmont has an opportunity at Onehunga of getting further away from the barren honours and possible relegation to second division next year, which may be the fate of the wodden-spooners in the senior championship.
