AT DIXIELAND The cabaret was topically decorated with models of the Southern Cross, and as the flyers and their party arrived they were greeted with rousing cheers and the spontaneous singing of “For They are Jolly Good Fellows.” During the evening the orchestra gave a vivacious interpretation of “Smithy,” with two girls, wearing flying helmets, singing the chorus. “Smithy,” as the crowd soon called him, was forced to appear on the stage and make a brief speech. The cabaret was instantly ringing and ringing again with cheers for the airman. Then he was allowed to dance awhile, though not for many minutes, for the crowd insisted on meeting him and he was in demand in every corner of the cabaret at once. Lieutenant Ulm hid himself when a speech was demanded, and cries of “We want Charlie” met with no response. Mr. Litchfield was also shy of speaking, and Mr. McWilli'am got lost just after dinner and did not appear at the cabaret. ’ Others present at Dixieland included: Airs.
