“NO SLANDER”
MR. McCOMBS’S DENIAL BRISK EXCHANGE IN HOUSE (THE SUN’$ Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, To-day. The dying stages of the licensing debate in the House of Representatives this morning were enlivened by a brisk exchange between Mr. W. S. Glenn and Mr. J. McCombs. Mr. Glenn asserted that Mr. McCombs, in stating that Mr. J. S. Dickson had engineered a clause into the Licensing Bill when it was before the Upper House last year had reflected on Mr. Dickson’s probity. Mr. McCombs: I did nothing of the sort.
Mr. Glenn: You can’t have your pudding both ways. You can’t slander a member like that.
Mr. McCombs: I didn’t slander him. Mr. Glenn: Then why did you refer to him like that? Mr. McCombs: He was responsible for the clause concerned and he will ■ay so. Mr. Glenn: How he is back in the House I’ve no doubt he will say so, but I could not stand by and see a member openly slandered like that. Voices: Oh, there was no slander.
