SELECTING TEACHERS

“MATRICULATION SHOULD BE STANDARD” EDUCATION BOARD’S VIEW The quota of probationers from the Auckland district for the Training College next year is estimated at 165, but the number may be slightly exceeded. The scheme for the adoption of probationers was submitted by the Education Department at the Auckland Education Board to-day. It was based on academic progress. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, objected to the scheme, saying that matriculation should be the standard of entry to college, and that partial Band higher leaving certificates should not necessarily give the candidate an advantage. Matriculation should be the standard set and the selection should be left to the discretion of the board. Mr. T. U. Wells: There is more in personality than academic attainments. The Chairman: The method suggested is going to be very cumbersome. The secretary pointed out that an attempt was made to keep a proportion of men in the service. If the academic standard were adopted the quota, of men would fall.

It was decided to send the objections to the department.
