HEAVY TRAFFIC
REDUCTION OF FEES PRIME MINISTER QUESTIONED (THB SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The report of the committee which investigated the many petitions praying for a reduction of heavy traffic fees was alluded to by Mr. H. Atmore this afternoon, when he asked the Prime Minister if the Government intended to bring in legislation in support of the committee’s recommendation that the petitions be favourably considered. The Prime Minister said it was an economic question, involving the whole position of returns to local bodies on account of road maintenance. Many local bodies had already intimated that if their returns from heavy traffic fees were cut down the deficiency would have to be made up to enable them to meet their commitments, from some other form of revenue. The Prime Minister added that it had not been determined that legislation was necessary to reduce the fees, except if it were proposed to alter the minimum fee. He promised to make further investigations.
