Theft of Fur Coat A ship’s steward, Raymond Patrick Letton, alias McCullough, aged 24. was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment by a Wellington magistrate to-day for the theft of a fur coat, valued at £4B, the property of Mollie Duncan, from a bedroom at the Alhambra Hotel. On a charge of breaking a pane of glass in a skylight, he was ordered to pay 10s, in default seven days in gaol.—P.A. * * • “Off the Deep End” An innocent piece of sky-larking at the Tepid Baths after the League game between Otago and Auckland on Saturday nearly ended in serious consequences. It is the practice for visiting teams to change at the baths and to return there after the match. One of the Otago men, having taken off his football togs, was standing on the side of the baths when a fellow player, unaware that his teammate could not swim, pushed him in. The luckless player was soon in difficulties, and although he was promptly rescued, restorative measures had to be applied before he recovered. * • 4> Motorists Fined At the Onehunga Police Court this morning, Edward John Evans and Daniel Hart were each fined 5s and costs for failing to register a motorbicycle. For having insufficient lights on motor vehicles, Charles Freer, L. C. Green, B. L. May, A. K. Rogers. John Shepherd and V. Walsh were convicted and ordered to pay costs. Matthew Halton was fined 10s and costs. For exceeding the speed limit across an intersection, C. E. Chambers, 31 miles an hour, fined 10s, and G. C. Burnard, 30 miles an hour, 10s. Missing Overcoat “There is a doubt in this case." said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, in dismissing a charge of theft against William Patrick McGrath, a labourer, 26 years of age. Edward Lyon said he had left qn overcoat, valued at £7 10s, with accused in a taxi, and both had disappeared when he returned. The defence said that McGrath believed that Lyon was returning to stay at defendant’s house. Because of that, the overcoat had been taken to the residence. * * » Breach of Contract Damages in the sum of £2,500 were awarded by Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court this morning to Mrs. i Cecilia Linie Kunst (Mr. L. P. Leary) j for breach of contract by William Ravage Tate (Mr. E. H. Northcroft) to purchase a deposit of glass-bearing sand at Awanui. Plaintiff claimed £3,000, contending that as the result of negotiations with Tate she- had broken off an agreement for the supply of silica to the Australian Glass Company. of Auckland, to her serious loss. The defence was that the option offered to Tate had never been exercised or that in any case it had been given to the Southern Cross Glass Company, Ltd., and that Tate was therefore not liable.
