AMATEUR BILLIARDS
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP ROBERTS V. SCOTT The final of the Auckland amateur billiards championship was begun last* evening before a large attendance. The finalists were E. V. Roberts and A. Scott. It was expected that a close struggle would eventuate, but Roberts, after being a good number of points behind in the opening stages, played brilliantly for the rest of the session, and finished up with an excellent average of 14. This average is rarely bettered by local amateur billiard players. Scott was first to strike form and by making breaks of 39 and 21, reached the century mark with a good lead. He increased' this a little later by another break of 29. Roberts, who appeared to be striking badly in the early stages, soon got in touch and his first effort was a break of 39. A little later he added a splendid 81 to his score. He was now playing at the top of iiis form and in four visits to the table his score jumped from 200 to 402, his consecutive breaks being 24, 90, 54 and 34. Roberts had a commanding lead at this stage, and completely dominated the play. He added further breaks of 39 and 35, eventually reaching the session points. Scott was unable to keep pace with the brilliant play of his opponent, but is expected to make a great effort to overhaul him in the finaj session this evening. The session scores are: E. V. Roberts, 501 (in play), (breaks, 39, 24, 90, 54, 81, 39, 35). A. Scott, 261 (breaks, 39, 21, 20, 29).
