DONCASTER ST. LEGER FAIRWAY BEATS FRENCH COLT TWO SUCCESSES NET A FORTUNE (United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association} (United Service) . LONDON, Wednesday. At the Doncaster spring meeting, second day, the St. Leger. the last of the season’s great three-year-old classics, was decided, with the following result: THE ST. LEGER STAKES A sweepstake of £5 eaph. with £2O exit.. if not struck out by first Tuesday in July, 1927; £25 more if not struck on>

by last Tuesday in March, 1928; and £SO more if not struck out by Tuesday, of last week; with £4,000 added; for entire colts and fillies, foaled 1925; colts 9.0, fillies 8.11. Breeder of winner to receive £500; owners of second and third horses to receive £4OO and £2OO respectively. St. Leger course, about 1 mile 6 furlongs 132 yards. Closed with 314 entries. FAIRWAY (Lord Derby), b c, by Phalaria—Scapa Flow, 9.0 . . . . 1 PALAIS ROYAL 11. (Jacques Wittouch), ch c, by Bruleur—Ptintaarenas, 9.0 - • 3 CYCLONIC (J. Courtaul), ch c, by Hurry On—Volcanic, 9.0 .... * There were 13 starters. Fairway won by a length and a-half, a length separating second and third. The St. Leger was on this occasion worth about £15,000. Last year its value was £13,280, of which the winner took £12,180. Fairway was tho favourite for the Derby, but ga\e a very disappointing display, the critics putting his failure down to the colt being upset by the excitement of the occasion, and seeing that Lord Derby’s representative subsequently won tho valuable Eclipse Stakes (£13,306), and now the St. Leger. that explanation ppears to have been justified. These two wins netted about £25,000 for Lord Derby. Fairway is trained at Newmarket by Frank Butters, and Palais Royal H. is trained for his French owner in France. Cyclonic is also prepared at Newmarket, by Basil Jarvis.
