TRIALS AT ELLERSLIE A FEW SMART GALLOPS But for a strong south-westerly wind, training operations were carried out in pleasant weather at Ellerslie this morning. No. 3 grass was available for fast work, and the sand was also in use, these tracks providing fair going. Several fair gallops were recorded, and possibly the best efforts went dowh to Restaurant, Master Doon, and Hoariri. No. 3 Grass Restaurant excelled her previous good track work by finishing in advance of Golden Wedding and Thursby, the time for the six furlongs, 1.20 1-5, being particularly smart. Restaurant was galloping strongly at the end, and obviously she is improving with each gallop. Golden Wedding showed her customary speed, and is in great fettle jxist now. Miss Alma was under restraint throughout a task over a round in 1.53. King Emerald travelled freely once round, and was timed to run the last six furlongs in 1.26. Lucklaine and Roman Pearl were companions for six furlongs, but the former cleared out, aftd finished several lengths in front, the journey taking 1.24 4-5.
Segment commenced slowly from the six furlong post, and was striding out well at the end, to register 1.25 1-5. A fair performance went down to Pompieus, who hit out well to run six furlongs in 1.21 2-5, the initial furlong in 12 4-5, and the first three in 39 2-5. Corinax and The Lover travelled over six furlongs in 1.25 2-5, but neither was going better than three-quarter pace. Piet was allotted a round, striding with plenty of speed over the first half-mile, and then being eased up, registering 1.50 for the distance. Still Going Strong Beau Cavalier moved with plenty of freedom over six furlongs in 1.27 2-5. He got to the end of the first furlong in 13 1-5, two in 26 3-5, and three in 41, and he appeared to be anxious to increase the pace. Welkne was doing no better than a good three-quarter pace over six furlongs in 1.25, while Bulolo and Monetize were asked to get to the end of a similar distance in 1.26 3-5, with the former slightly ahead at the finish. This pair of three-year-olds has no immediate engagements, so consequently they are required to do just working gallops at present.
Sir Russell was sprinted half a mile in 52 2-5, this being a fair gallop. The hunter Kyoto ran six furlongs in 1.33, and is gradually losing much of his surplus condition. Sulla struck out well over five furlongs in 2.9 4-5. while Eager Rose registered I.S 4-5 for the same ground. Knightstown had an advantage over Mountain Guide at the end of an easy half-mile. Bizarro proved much too good for Template, whom he beat easily once round, the last six furlongs taking 1.25. A Smart Five From a time point of view. Master Doon and Hoariri were credited with a fine gallop over five furlongs, the pair having very little ground between them at the finish, to record 1.5 2-5. Possibly the honours went to Hoariri. for he was well on the outside, and consequently covered mor' ground than his companion. From a standing start Myo'.a and Lineroo ran half a mile in 54 2-5, the ormer doing it best. Golden Krist and Killute were associated in a bout over a round in 1.51 2- the former leading throughout, and holding his companion at the end Llewellyn and Tago San finished on terms at the conclusion of five furlongs. in 1.10 4-5. After schooling, Pekatahi. Harbour View* and Yum Yum were in company in a task over a round, the last six furlongs taking 1.27 2-5. Pekatahi and Harbour View finished on terms, with Yum Yum tailed off. Blue Spear was allowed to go comfortably for half a mile, the last three furlongs taking 42 3-5, Yaqui getting over three in 40 2-5. Scot Free showed a good turn of speed by compassing a round in 1.45, the last six furlongs occupying 1.23 3-
Good Boy covered six furlongs easily, registering 1.9 for the last five. Potoanui and Glenotus were given an essay over a round in 1.56, both striding out with plenty of freedom. Several others were indulged in tasks on number three grass, but were not after time. Those noted included Gold Money, Neil. Phaola, Marble Mount, Quincoma, Master Clements, Bombarder, Lido and Clockwork. The Hurdlers
Quincoma (R. Olive), Marble Mount (E. Garrett) and Master Clements (Reid) were associated in a lesson over four schooling hurdles. The trio-'gave a fair exhibition, but not without fault. Fair Abbey (G. Holland) was ask£d to negotiate several pony hurdles, and although he jumped kindly at first, he subsequently baulked and tossed his rider over the obstacle. The horse 'got a foot tangled in the hurdle, and a panel of the fence had to be taken out before he could be released. Harbour View (R. Olive),' Pekatahi (H. Dulieu) and Yum Yum (P. Chrystal) gave a pleasing display over a round of the four schooling hurdles. A smart pace was set by Pekatahi and Harbour View, and the pair negotiated the fences in a manner worthy of more experienced hurdlers.
