UNDER SUSPICION

KIOSK LAME SINCE MARTON LATEST FROM WANGANUI (XUS ECHIL o; iviojdsJ WANGANUI, Tuesday. Fine weather prevailed when training operations commenced on the tracks this morning, though the sky was overcast, and appeared to threaten rain. This, however, did not eventuate, and everything was in favour of trainers with the exception of the going on No. 1 track, which was a trifle on the holding side after the week-end rain, in spite of the fact that it had not been used yesterday. The fast work that was done on it caused the horses to get into the ground a bit, but after breakfast it was better, if anything, and indications are that the course proper will be in /, first-class order for the meeting. The first to make their appearance were Duellona (Paladin —War Lady) and First Money (Paper Money— Peronilla), a pair of two-year-olds in J. McLoughlin’s care. These did pace work, and moved nicely. On No. 2 tpick, on which the half and three-quarter pace work was done prior to the breakfast interval, Talisker and The Warden separately were exercised, The Warden later being galloped in company with Salt Petrel. Ceremony Nearly Ready Ceremony, Alloy, and Roseglow were associated in a flutter over three furlongs, the brother to Lysander showing to advantage at the finish. lie appears much more forward than his stable-companions of the same age. Francolin and Rangitoa were another pair of juveniles who displayed pace over three furlongs, leaving that distance behind in 39 3-5, the first furlong being cut out in a fast 12 1-5. Episode, with a light-weight up; Mask, heavy-weight; and' Star Stranger (T. Bound) were companions in a gallop over six furlongs, which the trio covered in 1.16 4-5. The initial furlong was left behind in 12 4-5, and he next three furlongs' took them 28,. making the time for the four 50 4-5. Episode was well out all the way, while Star Stranger was on the rails, hence he was able to draw up within a head of the Guineas candidate at the finish, while Mask was nearly three lengths away, but the son of Limond and Cowl was not being unduly pushed. Ab'out Decoy Bird Limosa was not much use to Decoy Bird in a bout over six-Turlongs, for the son of Humbug finished well in front of his companion in 1.17 4-5, after the first furlong had been covered in 13, the quarter in 25 1-5, and the half in 50. Decoy Bird looks well. Baskier was given a couple of circuits on No. 2 track at a good pace. Full Feather was accompanied by his stable-eompanion, Swoopalong, when they set out for a run over five furlongs, the task taking them 1.6, with Full Feather showing to advantage. They ran the first furlong in 13, the quarter in 25, and the three furlongs in 37 4-5. It would occasion no surprise to see the representative of Chokebore Lodge occupying a prominent position at the finish of the race for the Wanganui Guineas. Lysander slipped over four furlongs, running the distance in a tick under 52, the last three taking 40, and the middle furlong 12 3-5. Imported Three-year-olds The Warden had Salt Petrel as his companion in a spin over five furlongs, but the son of The Verderer was slow to get, going over the initial furlong which was covered in slow time. After that, however, he ran up to Salt Petrel,, and had his measure at the turn for home, finishing well in front, to record 1.7 for the distance. Hunting Day was a length in front of Praeda after they had traversed three furlongs in 37 3-5, the initial furlong taking 12 3-5. The Hunting Song colt was moving along nicely at the finish. Singleton, ■who is rather a lazy worker, was sent five furlongs, taking I. for the distance, and travelling nicely at the finish. Knightlike and Vaux were companions over half a mile, the former •finishing in front to record 50 4-5 for the distance, after taking 12 1-5 for the first furlong, 24 2-5 for the first quarter, and 26 2-5 for the last two furlongs. White Ringlet and Lady’s Boy were to have gone together over five .furlongs, but unfortunately the first named got away too soon, and they came home at an interval in an unsatisfactory gallop. The former ran five in 1.5, taking 38 2-5 for the three, while Lady’s Boy was clocked to do half a mile in 51 2-5. A Smart Performance Much interest was taken in the display of Staghunter and Town Bird, two Flying Handicap candidates, who were associated over five furlongs. Town Bird did not get moving too well, and was left alll of three lengths. The Arehiestown gelding, was with Staghunter as they moved across the top, but in the run home .Staghunter came away again to finish in front. Town Bird was timed to do the first furlong in 12 1-5, the quarter in 23 3-5, and the three in 3o 2-5, while when Staghunter passed the post he had performed his part of the contract in 1.3, with Town 33ird taking perhaps a tick under that time. It was quite a pleasing display on the part of both, and neither would lose any friends for immediate engagements. Waltzer, King Lu, Queen Arch, and Lucy Rose finished in that order over ix furlongs, which they left behind in 1-1 < 4-5. Lucy Rose did not get away v'ith the others, but ran up to them at the four, only to drop back and finish about four lengths behind. Valkon and Te Koroke slipped ove** six furlongs, taking 1.16 3-5 for the distance, with Valkon doing best Timed from the five furlong peg, they ran the first furlong in 12 2-5, the next furlong in 12 1-5, and took 36 2-5 for three, taking 1.3 2-5 for the last five. Black Maire and Taurimu took 1.5 1-5 to run five furlongs, the first three being left behind in 37 2-5. A number of others did useful work, among their number being Symballo, Clever, High Disdain, and Concentrate 11.

Kiosk was trotted round on the inside of the course, but showed signs of tenderness in front. He has been touchy ever since racing at the Marton meeting last Wednesday.
