EARLY BIRD.

Jockey Severely Injured While working on the sand at Ellerslie on Monday morning, Semi Circle, ridden by T. Chrystal, crossed his legs and fell, turning a complete somersault. The jockey was thrown heavily, and was rendered unconscious for a time. Chrystal sustained injuries to the head and face, but is now reported to be doing well. The -horse was little the worse for the mishap. Reminders Racing at Wanganui to-morrow and on Saturday. A galaxy of equine talent is engaged. Avondale lirst day acceptances close at 5 p.m. on Friday next. Nominations for the Auckland spring meeting are due by 5 p.m. on Friday. First forfeits for the G.N. Guineas and Welcome Stakes close at the same time. Jockey’s Appeal The Australian Jockey Club will today hear the appeal lodged by M. McCarten against his three months’ suspension. Wanganui Brackets Coupled horses at Wanganui tomorrow are the following: Putiki Hack Handicap.—Pale , Star and Vigilance. Seafield Handicap.—King Lu and Waltzer. Flying Handicap.—The Hawk and Goshawk. Conference to Meet Again A special meeting of the Racing Conference has been called for October 19 at Wellington. The election for seats on the executive committee has been declared null and void, and fresh nominations are to be taken for another election to be held on the date named above. Gone South The North Island jockey, L. A. Pine, will be riding at the Ashburton, Geraldine and Dunedin meetings. Sprint Records Prior to his success at Wingatui Silver Paper set several half-mile training track records at Riverton that may stand for some time to come. Silver Paper is in the Dunedin Guineas. Final gallops at Wanganui this morning, together with the latest information from the scene of operations, bearing on the Wanganui meeting, will be found on the late news page.

Temporarily in Charge The Auckland horseman, E. Ludlow, has joined up with F. Gilehirst’s stable at Ellerslie, and during the absence of the latter at Wanganui with Avon Court, Ludlow will supervise the preparation of his team. Miss Norval’s Latest A report is to the effect that the brood mare, Miss Norval, has thrown a colt foal to Romeo. The Hill will be Open With the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting in the offing, it is the intention of Mr. A. Hill, racecourse manager at Ellerslie, to give trainers the opportunity of schooling their candidates over the hill, and it is understood that this'part of the course will be available for use on either to-morrow or Saturday. Several hunters were indulged in schooling practice at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and on account of this it is probable that trainers will prefer to wait for Saturday before taking on the hill. Marble Mount’s Jumping Since he went amiss at the Great Northern meeting in June, Marble t Mount has not been required to do much in the way of strenuous exercise, but with the spring meetings close at hand he will be obliged to enter into his campaign with more seriousness. Pie is to race at Avondale, and it was with this object in view that he was schooled at headquarters yesterday morning. His fencing, however, was not withoift fault, and he has certainly given better exhibitions on former occasions. Possibly the fact* that he has raced very little over hurdles, and that it is close on three months since he last took part in a race, had something to do with his poor display, and no doubt an improvement will be noticeable in his next effort. Word for Clockwork The leppers in attendance at) Ellerslie at present practically consist of hunters, and a few that may be mentioned as likely to gain honours in this class within the next few months are Clockwork, Importer and Rafferty, the last-named having failed in his last few outings. These three were associated in a bout over the steeplechase fences on the flat yesterday morning, and their clean fast jumping evoked admiration from bystanders. Improvement is noticed in Clopkwork, more so than in the other pair, and it would cause no surprise if he proves capable of accounting for *a hunt cup before the opportunities have elapsed. Pointers for Wanganui The Warden was facing the barrier for the first time Avhen he ran third at Wanganui. He will be at his best later on, but may win soon. Mauriaena failed to get off the mark smartly at Wanganui, a weakness that was apparent last season. She cannot afford to give away any start on the Wanganui course. # * Small fish are sweet. Episode is to take on the Wanganui Guineas, and this race will tune her up for similar classics at Avondale and Ellerslie. ★ * * Teremoana ran second in a maiden event at Dannevirke. Improvement has been made in the interim, so it is reported. Foreign Fancy showed some pace at Marton among the hack sprinters. She is in her right class at Wanganui. The crack jockey, Roy Reed, has some real good mounts to-morrow. It will be surprising if he draws a blank. It won’t bo fair. * * * Knightlike didn’t like the soft track at Marton. The firmer ground at Wanganui should see him stepping lively round the bends. He is speedy over a short course, if not brilliant—yet. Cohesion has something to beat in the Hurdles to-morrow. He is good, however, and it will be interesting to see him tried right out. Gold Cure failed to hit the front in the seven-furlong hack at Marton. He was galloping over everything at the finish. He was a big favourite, twice as heavily backed as Pangolin, who was the form horse to follow, so that some people thought Gold Cure was a mild imitation of Gloaming when it came to speed. To-morrow? * * * Singleton was thought good enough to be entered for the Avondale Cup. On the sertngth of that there will be inquiries for him to beat Pale Star (winner of his three last races) and Gold Cure. A middle distance should not trouble him. Day Guard wilk find Wanganui a course to suit him, provided he leaves the awkwardly placed seven furlongs’ barrier with the others. If left that will be the end of it. * * * Orazone was one of the pacemakers in the Marton Handicap last week. What about the seven and a-quarter furlongs of the Seafield Handicap? * * * Outside of Episode in the Wanganui Guineas, the market should show a wide range. One cannot even forecast What will be best backed next to tlie brilliant Limond filly. * * * Did Lady’s Boy lose his chance at Marton? He figures in the hack and open sprints, and with a real horseman up may be dangerous in either, the hack contest for preference. Queen Arch is not at all badly treated in the Marangai Handicap. It is a race where a horse must have some big surprises in this event, and little wonder. Shining Armour and Iloromea are capable of administering a shock. * * * Despite the high-class field in the Flying, if Oration is on the premises at the home turn he ought to pull it off. His easy win at New Plymouth was followed by a fair effort at Marton, when he appeared to turn it in after being taken on. He may be the better for the race. * • * Staghunter registered a great gallop over five furlongs at Wanganui a week ago, and a repetition of that try-out would see him led in as the winner of the Flying. But he does not always repeat his track performances. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT “W ager.”—Archecn was scratched for the Railway Handicap at Mafton at mid-day on the day of the race, Wednesday, September 5.
