W.C.T.U. ACTIVITY

AUCKLAND CONVENTION ADDRESSES ON PROHIBITION The Mental Defectives Bill was discussed yesterday at the annual convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, Auckland District, which was opened in the West Street Church, Mrs. N. S. Benfell presiding. The reports from the various branches showed that good work had been done, particularly in the encouragement of the growth of Bands of Hope. The treasurer’s report showed a credit balance of £3l 3s 3d. The Dominion president, Mrs. T. E. Taylor, addressed the convention, speaking principally on the subject of Prohibition in America. A deputation from the New Zealand Alliance, consisting of Messrs. J. W. Court and the Rev. G. Jackson, waited on the conviction. Mr. Court spoke of the work being done by the alliance. The Rev. Mr. Jackson, in explaining the aims of the alliance, said they were all in a fight that must go on, and would not cease with the poll. He made reference to the excellent work that Mr. Court was doing in the cause of Prohibition.
