SOCIAL SERVICE WORK

REPORT TO PRESBYTERY The remarkable progress of the orphanage work carried on by the Presbyterian Church throughout New Zealand was summarised in a special report presented by the Rev. G. Budd at the Auckland Presbytery yesterday. Property ranging from £75,000 to £IOO,OOO had been acquired, the debt upon it being less than £6,000. There were 14 homes. Eight homes in the South Island reported 222 children, and six in the North Island 262. About £20.000 was absorbed in maintenance of children, apart from the cost of buildings. The report stated that in regard to the visitation of gaols and hospitals, the number of Presbyterian inmates of such institutions was comparatively small. Although one quarter of the population was returned as Presbyterian, less than one-sixth of those in the public hospital were Presbyterian, while in the Auckland Infirmary the percentage was lower still.
