NEW REGENT
VAUDEVILLE AND PICTURES “Fifty-Fifty” —that’s the motto of the modern suffragette in the picture now being shown at the Regent Iheatre. Tho star is Bebe Daniels, and her latest picture is entitled “The FiftyFifty Girl.” “I’ll bet you my half of the mine against yours that I can run it as any man—and never call for help!” This was Kathleen O’Hara’s challenge to 3im Donahue, but Kathleen didn’t know what trouble her challenge was getting her into. She was a very modern girl—the kind that wears neckties and declaims on the equality of the sexes, and Jim was just a regular fellow, who knew that Kathleen loved him as he loved her, .even though he couldn’t get her to admit it. ‘ But running a mine against organised opposition was a pretty difficult job and the story of how she got on without losing her rights of half the mine make a very enjoyable and entertaining picture. Tom Katz and his Saxophone Band are still captivating the record audiences at the Reegnt Theatre. Their entertainment is a musical treat, for they play jazz intermingled with snatches from the classics. One could easily imagine that their playing is the music of a melodious organ, the effect of the deep pedal notes being given by the bass saxophone, with the full range of stops to the solo effects. From the classics the little coloured bellboys drift into lighter themes, and even revive old, old favourites. Their varied entertainment is charming, and certainly worth hearing again and again. A full supporting programme is being presented, and the music capably handled as usual by the Regent Operatic Orchestra under the baton of Mr. Maurice Guttridge.
