From yesterday’s Late Edition. FIRE SWEEPS STREET
FIVE HOUSES BURNED DAMAGE OVER £6,000 Press Association .WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Five houses valued at over £6,000, were destroyed by fire at Eastbourne this morning. The blaze started at 69, Oroua street, shortly after four o’clock, and is believed to have been caused by a defective chimney. There was a fairly strong northerly wind blowing and all efforts of the volunteer fire brigade and many others failed to hold the flames in check. One after another the succeeding houses caught alight, then efforts were concentrated on No. 79, a low cottage standing well back from the street and making a break between the fire and nine more houses, which otherwise must also have gone. The houses burned were owned oy Messrs. N. Barker, Insurance £1,000; F. A- N'eilson, Carterton; J. Morris; T. Auton, (occupied by Mr. J. Purcell t and Mr. J. Scaife. Mr. Barker’s house was insured for £ 1,000 and that of Mr. Scaife for £250.
