HOSPITAL AUXILIARY
A BUSY MONTH The depot committee of the Hospital Auxiliary held its monthly meeting in the Hospital Board room on Friday morning. Mrs. Arthur YVakelin, the convened, presided, and reports were received from the sub-committees. There was a large attendance of committee members. The buying committee reported having spent the monthly quota and special grant for warm clothing, boots and slippers for men and children, wool for baby comforts, also flannels and serge that the Birkdale Women’s Institute are making into men’s singlets and boys’ shorts. Six upholstered easy chairs were purchased and handed over to the Onehunga branch of the auxiliary as a gift to the Auckland Infirmary. The auxiliary adopted this method of recognising the good work accomplished by the Onehunga ladies, who have the infirmary under their charge. Parcels of clothing, and donations, were received from the following branches: Swanson, Te Atatu, Mount Eden, and Birkdale. The transport sub-committee reported having called and delivered numerous parcels of clothing and foodstuffs for the depot in the various suburbs. The depot assistant reported that the month of August was a busy one, and that the great increase in the quantity of orders and clothing issued was mainly attributable to the activities of the visiting committee, which on allotted days went through the different wards seeking cases for relief. One hundred and thirty-seven of these were attended to during the month. Two hundred garments were issued to the hospital, 30 to the infirmary, 50 to the St. Helens Elospital. Eight hundred and seventy-nine garments, 61 bags of coal, and 336 orders for meat and groceries were given to the sick and needy. A miscellaneous quantity of jam, eggs, and books was also given out. Mrs. R. Iv. Smith was elected subconvener for the visiting committee. Votes of thanks were passed to the Victoria and Navy Leagues for the monthly donations received, and also to the general public for the many contributions received at the depot. Men’s clothing and boots are urgently required, and will be gladly accepted at the depot.
