MANY SPEEDSTERS FINED Mr. F. FI. Levien, S.M., the presiding magistrate at the Otahuhu Police Court yesterday, was unable to deal with all the charges on the list, and a lengthy collision case was adjourned till the next sitting of the court on October 8, before half the witnesses had given evidence. The usual number of speeding cases was dealt with, and substantial penalties were entered in the majority of cases. POLICE CASES Roland Derbyshire failed to deliver equipment, valued at £1 18s 9d. to the Defence Department, when instructed to do so, and was flned 10s and ordered to pay 10s costs and 2s 6d expenses. Harry Guards was charged with being on licensed premises, the Panmure Hotel, after hours. In evidence Guards stated that on leaving a convenience on the hotel property he was accosted by a man in front of the Panmure Hall, who grabbed him by the arms, and asked him if he had any liquor. When he asked the intruder who he was, he was informed that he was the local constable searching for liquor. Guards denied attempting to procure liquor, and stated he was practically a total abstainer. The magistrate, in dismissing the information, and ordering defendant to pay 10s costs, said he was technically guilty of the offence. James Wood was fined 10s and ordered to pay 10s costs, for riding a bicycle after sunset without proper lights. A fin© of 20s and court costs 10s was charged against J. M. Deas, who was found guilty of continuing to use faulty scales on a motor-van for weighing fruit, and vegetables, after being instructed' by an inspector to forward them for testing. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR CASES For riding a motor-cycle at a speed liable to be dangerous to the pub.lic, F. E. Jackson was fined £2 and court costs 10s, and for indulging in pillion riding without the proper equipment, he was charged £1 and ordered to pay 10s costs. No lights on his bicycle after sunset cost Ernest W. Lee 10s and costs 10s, and for not having a reflector at the rear of his bicycle he was con-* victed and ordered to pay 10s costs, with instructions to have his bicycle put in order. Stanley Monahan, a service car driver, was charged on two counts of speeding on separate days, and was debited with £2 and 10s costs on each charge. Wiiliam Hill, another service car driver, did 34.8 miles an hour through a trap, and Traffic Inspector Fletcher stated that he returned immediately and repeated the performance. For his bravado he was debited with £ 3 and 10s court costs. J. R. Ford, who was charged with driving at a speed liable to be dangerous to the public, in a written statement expressed the opinion that nobody could get 30 miles an hour out of his car. The traffic inspector's time stood, and he was charged £2 and court costs 10s. For driving motor vehicles at a speed liable to be dangerous to the public, at speeds varying from 30 to 37 miles an hour, fines of £2 and court costs were entered against E. J. Tobley Reginald Lewis, Christopher Yeates Vivian Alfred Brown, A. Jackson A. Clive Johns, C. G. Vospei\ R.
