ROAD CYCLING
RACING AT MANGERE POTTER’S EASY WIN Good fields and close finishes, with the exception of the actual winner of the cash race, were the order of the day in Saturday's races. The amateur events, 55 miles A and B classes, prove very popular with riders, big fields competing in both. Unfortunately, weather conditions, which always play an important part in these week-end races, were distinctly bad. A cold, damp southerly wind greatly interfered with competitors, particularly so in the Auckland Club’s 20-mile race, putting many riders out of action. The following are the results: Mariukau Amateur Cycle Club’s 55miles “A” Class Open Handicap:—F. E. Pinker, lm, 1; W .Dwight, lm, 2; S. Baird, lm, 3. Won by inches; 22 started. Fastest time, J. H. Wade, scr, 13m 58s. A representative field of first-class amateurs —with the exception of M. P. Byrnes—competed in this event. The placed riders were in a winning position when half the distance had been covered, and thanks to the pacing of S. Baird and W. Dwight, held that position to the finish. F. E. Pinker, who won, finished fast; but as he had done little or no work during the running of the race, this was expected of him. He just got the verdict, as only inches separated a number of riders. J. H. Wade had to keep moving to beat J. Whitten for fastest time. 55-miles B Class.—R. G. Currie, lm ; 15s, 1; D. H. Butterworth, lm 30s, 2; T. J. Farrelly, lm 30s, 3. A very close finish; won by a length. Twenty-three started. Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club’s 20-mile race for G. Mathieson’s Cup.— F. Potter, 65m, 1; K. J. Mathieson, 3m, 2; J. Henderson, 3m, 3; N. Healey, 3m, 4. Time, 58m 555. Fastest time, F. Prior, scr, 51m 31 l-ss. Seventeen started. Davey, Lee and Matthews, on 9m, were first away, but the 6m 30s riders, Whyte and Potter, were soon after them. The hot bunch on 3m, Henderson, Mathieson and Healey, were the favourites, but Storey and Francis, Lindop and Prior were all looked on to put up great rides, the latter two being on their own. When half the distance had been covered there was only one rider in it, and that was Potter. He was nearly 3m to the good entering the last lap, and staying on well, was never sighted, running home a winner by 150 yards. A great race for second took place between Mathieson, Henderson and Healey, but the former carried too much speed, and won easily. F. Prior, scr, again secured fastest time. The winner is an examateur, and put up a brilliant performance. He was amply paid, however, as he won the best trophy so far given this season. PALMERSTON TO WANGANUI Press Association WANGANUI, Sunday. A road cycling race yesterday from Palmerston North to Wanganui (49 miles) resulted: D. Toomer (Wellington), 4m, oh 11m 325, 1 (fastest); W. Collins (Palmerston North), 10m, 3h 17m 20s, 2; L. Manning (Wellington), 4m, 3h 14m 7s, 3. CANTERBURY ROAD RACE Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The Canterbury 50-mile road championship race was won by N. J. Muir (smin), 1; with E. E. McGaskell (S min), 2: and J. H. McNicholl (7min) 3. L. Either (scr) made fastest time—2hrs 14min 42sec.
