GAME CALLED OFF
RUMPUS AT OTAHUHU FREE-FOR-ALL ENDS MATCH The Senior B League match, between Kingsland and Otahuhu, at Otahuhu on Saturday afternoon, came to an abrupt ending when the referee, Mr. Hill, stopped play before the call of time, and awarded the game to Kingsland on account of the tactics of the. home team. As was anticipated, the game was a hard one from the start, and what promised to be an even contest ended up in a free-for-all. both sides indulging in the use of fists and boots. DONNYBROOK STARTS The referee made several attempts to separate the combatants, but immediately on the resumption of play, left hooks, right jabs and uppercuts predominated, and the controller of the whistle was not overlooked in the handing out of the bouquets. Several reasons were given for the undignified exhibition, shepherding being one of the main ones. It is claimed this enabled the visitors to move play from their own twenty-five and register a try, and the allowing of a force when the home team claimed a try. Several of the players left the field injured, and the referee pursued the only possible course in stopping the game. After the match, the referee, while boarding a bus, was helped on his way upward by a boot worn by one of the Otahuhu players.
