MAORIS SUE CROWN
PUMICE FOR ROAD WORKS (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Thursday. • A claim against the Crown for £224 for royalty for pumice taken and damages was made by three Rotorua native land-owners, Mere Ngahuia, Rangi Ngahuia and Rewhati Ngahuia (Mr. Carter) in the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Blair, to-day. The statement of claim set out that the suppliants were the owners of a block of land at Otaramaramae, on the Rotorua-Paengaroa Road, and it was alleged that for a period of nine months prior to October 5, 1926, the Public Works Department trespassed on the land, and removed 1,392yds of pumice for surfacing the RotoruaPaengaroa Road. For the defence it was admitted that 1,690 cubic yards of pumice were removed. The defence valued the material taken at Id per cubic yard, and claimed that £5 would cover the damages for trespass. The sum of £l2 had been paid into court, and the Crown considered that this was sufficient to satisfy the petitioners’ claim.
After evidence had been given regarding the estimated value of the pumice, the case- was adjourned.
