AMATEUR BILLIARDS

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP STEVENSON DEFEATS TAYLOR .The final game in the' first round of the Auckland provincial billiards championship for the Billiards, Ltd., Shield, was played last evening. C. A. Stevenson, the King Country champion, defeated H. Taylor by a single point in a most exciting game. The game opened quietly. Taylor was the first to reach the century and maintained his lead until after the 200 mark had been passed. Excitement then became intense as both players took turns in leading, while on several occasions the scores were level. Toward the final over-eagerness caused Taylor to miss some shots, and Stevenson eventually ran to points with Taylor only one point off the 500. The final scores were:—C. A. Steveson, 500 (breaks 22, 20, 42, 32, 32, 30, 20); H. Taylor, 499 (breaks 31, 22, 21, 20, 20). A. Scott will play H. Rae in the first game of the second round this evening. ‘
