AMATEUR BILLIARDS

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP YESTERDAY’S GAMES The Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship for the Billiards, Limited, Shield, was continued yesterday. E. V. Roberts defeated F. Lovelock in the afternoon, and E. W. Warren won by a narrow margin from W. E. Hackett in the evening. The New Zealand champion, Roberts, was in great form against Lovelock, and not once did he lose his hold on the game. Lovelock gave a most creditable showing. The final scores were: E. V. Roberts, 500 (breaks, 33, 30, 55, 30, 55); F. Lovelock, 388 (breaks, 32, 31, 34, 31).

A most exciting game was played by Warren and Hackett. After a cautious opening by both players, Hackett was the first to reach the century, and he maintained his lead at the 200 mark. Warren made up the leeway with two good breaks and a struggle for points ensued. Hackett still held the lead at the .400 mark, but a splendid break of 72 by Warren gave him the lead for the first time in the game. From then on the scores were never separated by more than a few points. Warren was leading by 497 to 494 when he reached his points, with a somewhat lucky shot. The final scores were; E. W. Warren, 500 (breaks 21, 42, 25, 46, 22, 27, 72, 34) ; W. E. Hackett, 494 (breaks, 27, 59, 29, 23, 30).
