HAWKE’S BAY TAKES GAME IN LAST SPELL

17 POINTS TO 9 Press Association. PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Before a moderate attendance, Hawke’s Bay to-day defeated Manawhenua by 17 points to 9. The Manawhenua backs failed to reproduce the improved form shown against Taranaki last week, although they started well with a good try. The Bay backs did not shine as a combined force, but they had some clever individualists, who were too good for Manawhenua. The home forwards were beaten in the scrums by the Bay, but otherwise held their own. The first try came to Manawhenua from a passing rush initiated by Akuira, but Taylor’s kick failed. Shortly afterwards Hawke’s Bay opened scoring from a penalty kick, and Huxtable scored a few minutes later, the kick failing.

Smith began the second half by scoring for the Bay. Manawhenua*s play improved, and an unconverted try by Roberts and a penalty goal kicked by Tatana made the scores equal.

Hawke’s Bay dominated the game in the last few minutes, Huxtable and Smith both scoring.
