“TOUTING” FOR PUPILS

TEACHERS ACCUSED

GETTING CHILDREN TO PAPAKURA Allegations that teachers were “touting round” with motor-cars to increase the attendance at Papakura schools at the expense of smaller ones in the district were made by a deputation from the Ardmore School to the Auckland Education Board to-day. “It seems unfair to increase Papakura attendance at the expense of the others," said Mr. J. W. Dixon. “Paid servants of the board should not be allowed to tout around and get children.” The chairman of the board, Mr. A. Burns, said that it had been considered there were so few children that a contractor was not required. “We will ask the teachers if they are touting for children." he said. “It is a serious accusation, because, if they did this, the teachers would not be loyal to teachers of the other schools." The Ardmore deputation, which also included Messrs. G. Burnside and T. St. Paul, objected to the transference of teachers from their school without the committee receiving notice. alleged that the distances, certified by a head teacher, of the homes of several children from the schools, were not correct. The chairman told them that an officer would be sent to check distances, and the teachers would be asked for reports. If the local people did not want consolidation, it would not be forced on them.
