HAUGHMOND WINS AGAIN A LIKELY STAYER Warwick Farm trainers had a field day at Menangle last week, when they scored three wins and recorded several placings. Trainer W. P. Bill led in two winners, Bavardo and Haughmond, and as they were heavily backed their connections have had a really profitable time. Crucial, stable mate of Sharp Son, was the other winner trained at the Farm, and it looked as if the finish would be fought out in the Welter by another Warwick Farm candidate in Sunny Empire. Crucial made all the running, but Sunny Empire came so fast on the outside that he looked as if he would beat the pacemaker; but he tired, and she went on and just beat old AJI Home, with Sunny Empire a fair third. Everybody wanted to back Quagga, a brother to Belle Isle, in the Maiden Welter. Bavardo, which was backed from twenties to less than half that, finished fast, and beat the pacemaker Rutilla rather easily, with Briller third. Backed to a short price, Haughmond (the half-sister by Limond to Thespian) recorded her second win at the Menanglo track by winning the Novice in a canter from Costoboc and Lord Orby. Haughmond is such a good galloper that she is likely to win more races over a bit of a distance for Trainer W. P. Bill, who now has a big team in work at Warwick Farm.
For many years he was preparing horses on the South Coast, but coming to the metropolis with Gold Cap and several others a few years ago, he has ho regrets. He won several races with Shrapnel after the latter went to the ‘‘bush” and became sound.
