BOY RESCUES CANOEIST

LEAP INTO WANGANUI RIVER (Special to THE SUN) WANGANUI, Monday. When a heavily-built man capsized the canoe in which he was paddling near Sandy Hook, about six miles up the Wanganui River, on Saturday afternoon, Leonard Gordon Hatch, aged 13, jumped in and supported him until help arrived. The man was fully dressed, and a strong current was running. He could no! swim. A nearby launch was headed for the struggling man, who, with his rescuer, was taken to safety. Application is to be made to the Royal Humane Society, it is stated, to have the boy’s bravery recognised.
