BOTANIC GARDENS

FOUR RECOMMENDED FOR DOMINION Considerable discussion took place at a meeting of the Auckland Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture last evening, regarding the National Botanic Gardens scheme. A number of resolutions were carried, including the opinion that it was necessary to have more than one botanic garden ow-ing to climatic conditions. The council considered it necessary to support the principle of botanic gardens in Wellington. Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. It was also thought that the gardens should be administered by a board which should include one representative from each of the centres, tw-o Government nominees and one from each of the University of New- Zealand, the New Zealand Institute, the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture and the Horticultural Trades Association. The gardens should be of equal status In every respect and there should be a qualified curator. The function of the board would be to raise and allocate funds and material and to act in advisory capacity to city councils and other bodies in the control of the botanic activities. The actions of the Auckland Botanic Gardens Committee w-ere discussed at length and certain recommendations were agreed upon. Arrangements have been made for Mr. W. R. B. Oliver, the newl3--ap-pointed director of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, to give a lecture in Auckland.
