WIN FOR WARATAHS
19 POINTS TO SIX PLAYER ORDERED OFF Press Association NAPIER, Sunday. The New South Wales touring Rugby team played tlie Hawke’s Bay representatives at Napier yesterday in perfect weather, except for a fairly strong breeze, before 6,000 spectators. A bright, open game resulted in a win for the visitors by 19 points to 6. The visitors were very smart in all departments, but dropped a great many passes, and enjoyed a large share of luck. The referee found it necessary to warn a New South Wales forward during the second half, and within a few seconds he ordered O’Connor off the field. This is said to be due to the offender deliberately charging into a man who had got rid of the ball, immediately after being cautioned for the same thing. The spectators bore O’Connor no ill-will and heartily applauded him as he left the field. Hawke’s Bay played the visitors’ own game, throwing the ball about among the backs and forwards, and a little safer handling might have brojught results. New South Wales took possession of the game from the kick-off and in a few minutes Hemingway crossed the line. The kick failed, making Waratahs 3, Hawke’s Bay 0. It was not long, however, before Setford equalised, Yates’s kick failing. A try by Towers for the visitors was converted, but the kick for another score by Smairl failed. Waratahs 14, Hawke’s Bay 3. Just before half-time Huxtable crossed for Plawke’s Bay, but Yates failed again with the kick. It was not until a few minutes before the end of the game that New South Wales scored again. Hemingway ran round the posts and 'Bartlev converted. The final score was: New South Wales 19, Hawke’s Bay 6. WAIKATO VICTORIOUS OVER WANGANUI MATCH AT HAMILTON (From Our Own Correspondent.) PIAMILTON, Sunday. The representative Rugby football match played at Rugby Park, Hamilton, on Saturday, between Wanganui and Waikato, resulted in a win for Waikato by 11 points to 8. The game started with a hard' forward rush by Waikato. Buckingham and Fitzgerald took possession, and some pretty passing followed.. The ball was transferred to Quin, and then to Anderson, who after a fine run scored a neat try. W. Bourke converted. A similar movement shortly after saw Tuck and Fitzgerald carry the ball to Wanganui’s twenty-five. Quin completed the movement by cutting in and scoring. The kick failed. An obstruction by Fitzgerald allowed Darby to score for the visitors. McLean converted. Half-time sounded with the scores: Waikato 8, Wanganui 5. Strenuous forward play marked the opening of the second spell. Oourtney received a pass, and when nearing Wanganui’s line transferred to Fitzgerald, who was off-side. Quin took up, and Bourke, Anderson and Kay handled until Tuck got possession and scored. The kick failed. Waikato 11, Wanganui 5. The visitors retaliated, and from a scrummage in centre-field, Mcßae broke through for the visitors to score a neat try. The game ended shortly after with the scores: Waikato 11, Wanganui 8. Mr. C. N. Rabone was the referee.
