CHARITY ABUSED
MAN ATTACKS BENEFACTOR The fact that an overcoat which had been promised him was not ready when he wanted it caused Henry James Godfrey Smith, aged 45, to attack the man who was giving it to him. Smith was charged at the Police Court this morning with assault. Richard Wallace Isaacs, caretaker of the city shelter, Parnell, said that he was standing outside the shelter, on the footpath, on Saturday evening, when Smith came up and asked him for a cigarette. “I told him I had none,” said witness, “and he asked me whether I was waiting for my policemen friends. When I denied it, he attacked me. Smith has been staying in the dosshouse, and I promised him an overcoat. He may have been annoyed because I sent the coat away to have it altered, and it was not ready for him. Smith: The trouble has been brewing for six weeks.
The prisoner, who had a long list, was fined £2 , in default seven days, Mr. F K. Hunt. S.M., remarking that he had abused the charity given him.
