GEARY JOINS THE TEAM
CRICKETERS FOR AUSTRALIA USEFUL ALL-ROUNDER (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) LONDON, Saturday. The Leicestershire professional, G. Geary, received an official invitation from the Marylebone Cricket Club today to join the English cricket team for Australia. Geary’s remarkable slip fielding in the final test match at the Oval in 1926, when Australia lost the “ashes,” will long be remembered.
Geary is a most useful all-round player, who should be valuable in Australia, provided he is fit. There seems to be every possibility that he will replace V. W. C. Jupp, the Northamptonshire amateur, who isL standing by in readiness in case of eventualities. In view of the fact that P. G. H. Fender, the Surrey amateur, is reported to be going to Australia at the time of the test matches in a private capacity, it is interesting to recall that there is a considerable volume of opinion m England in favour of his inclusion in the team. Fender to-day took Tiis 100th wicket for the season.
G. Geary was at the top of * the Leicestershire bowling- averages last year, with 71 wickets for an average of 18.12, and he made 769 runs. He was chosen for the M.G.G. team for South Africa last year. Leicestershire rose last year to seventh place in the championship list, against the 13th place in the previous year. They drew with ' the New Zealand team.
