Colossal Liner Being Built
CUNARD CHALLENGER
To Cost White Star £6,000,000
BRITISH BUILDERS BUSY
(United P.A. —By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) liecd. 10 a.m. LONDON, Friday. THE White Star Line announces that an Atlantic liner of 60,000 tons is being built at the Harland and Wolff yards, Relfast. It will exceed the Majestic by 4,000 tons and the Leviathan by 6,000 tons. The cost is £-6,000,000. This is interpreted as a challenge to the rumoured new gigantic Cunarder.
A British Official Wireless message says that during the last month the Clyde shipyards were particularly busy, their productivity being higher than during any other month in the year. The returns show that 22 vessels, aggregating over 73,000 tons, were launched. The tonnage output of the Clyde yards during the eight months of the present year more than doubled that
of the corresponding period last year. The figures for the 150 ships launched were 417,000 tons, compared with 103,000 tons. The shipyards at Belfast and Hartlepool also have large contracts in hand, and it is announced that the Pacific Steam Navigation Company has ordered from Harland and Wolff’s a new motor mail-and-passenger vessel for the West Coast of South America service.
