PAS AT ARAPUNI
TOURIST LEAGUE DEMANDS PRESERVATION The New Zealand Tourist League has suggested to the Scenery Preservation Board that steps might be taken to reserve the unique pas which were brought under public notice about 18 months ago at Waotu, above Arapuni, on the Waikato River. Piranui, the main pa, is of interest for its construction and the fact that in the rock sides of the river bluff on which it is built the natives had cut water cisterns- Last year some members of the league inspected the pa, and the owner might be willing to help in setting aside the necessary land to keep the pas intact. Representatives of the museum also visited the pas last year; the feature of these forts were the subject of a lecture before the Maori Race section of the institute recently. Already vandals are at work in removing trophies from the pas which had been forgotten by the public for 100 years. Burning off operations disclosed them again, and led to Maoris narrating the history attaching to them.
