BURGLARY CHARGES
YOUNG MAN BEFORE COURT ‘DIDN’T REMEMBER DOING IT” (From Our Own Correspondent J HAMILTON. Thursday. What the Crown solicitor. Mr. H. T. Gillies, described as “unusual and peculiar circumstances,*' were disclosed in the Supreme Court to-day when a young married mar, Jack Young Thomson (Mr. 11. G. Corbett), pleaded not guilty to breaking and entering the premises of the Farmers’ Trading Company at Otorohanga, and stealing £5 17s lid in money and several watches, valued at £7 17s 2d. lb* was also charged with breaking and entering the premises of the Farmers' Co-operative Auctioneering Company. Ltd. The Crown solicit< r, Mr. 1 1. T. • lilies, described the circumstances as unusual and peculiar. He said »*n friends. He went home and Kit a note addressed to liis wife in which lie indicated that he intended to drown himself. Accused was found by the police next day, and ho made two statements accounting for his movements the previous night. The premises referred to were entered that night. One place was entered through a hole cut in the wall with a saw, which was the property of a cabinetmaker. Footprints near the cabinetmaker’s shop corresponded with those of accused. In the other premises a sock which belonged to accused was found. MIGHT HAVE DONE IT Mr. Gillies read two statements by accused, in which he said he did not think he entered the two premises named. He might have done so, but he did not remember. Evidence was given by two men that accused was in their company at a party until 11 p.m. on June 2. They saw him drink several glasses of beer, but said he was sober. Richard Bell, cabinetmaker, identified a saw as his property. He said it had been taken from his shop without his knowledge.
