HIGH PRICE OF PETROL

INQUIRY SUGGESTED

Press Association. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The president of the Otago Motor Club, Mr. A. E. Ansell, speaking at a meeting of the club this evening, quoted figures intended to show that petrol companies in New Zealand were making an unreasonable profit. tie said that with the exception of Spain and Italy, petrol was dearer here than in any other country in the world. Outlining arguments raised by petrol companies to show that their prices were not exorbitant, he said the chief one was the high cost of distribution to a scattered population. After discussion, the following resolution was carried unanimously: “That the Government be requested to institute a Board of Trade inquiry in order to determine whether or not petfol companies operating on the New Zealand market are obtaining more than a fair and reasonable rate of commercial profit.”
