LAST OF LANDMARK
REMOVING DUDER’S WHARF OTHER PROVISION FOR YACHTSMEN For 60 years one of the landmarks of Devonport, and once the centre of shipping activity at the North Shore, Duder’s Wharf is rapidly being demolished. The Auckland Harbour Board is to use the best of the timber. Board representatives have discussed with members of the Devonport Yacht Club the provision of a landing-place for yachtsmen. About 50 &oats use the protected anchorage, and it is probable that a substantial ramp, with steps, will be erected. In addition, a cradle capable of handling yachts as big as the Viking will be built. When the cradle in Mechanics’ Bay was built, the board did not contemplate* Its use by the big yachts, which were generally taken out of the water near Duder’s Wharf for cleaning. The yacht club is to erect a small jetty in deep water near the pavilion. An area is being reclaimed, and dinghy shelters will be built on to the pavilion.
